Shanha Talks To
Jesus
By this time, every seat in
the meeting area was occupied. Some of
the children sat on the ground in front
of their parents. Other people stood
outside the meeting area, and a few sat
on the log borders that cordoned off the
church area. Reverend Morris opened with
a prayer. Most of the local people didn't
know what he was doing and simply sat,
watching him. When he finished, Jim,
Rhasha, Shanha, Jackie, and Simbatu
walked to one side of the meeting area.
All the seats had been taken so they sat
on the ground. Francis rose and walked
over to join Shanha.
Reverend Morris began his
sermon by telling the village people
about the life of Jesus. He explained how
Jesus was born in a manger to a virgin
mother. "Jesus was God's son,"
Reverend Morris said, "and he died
on earth so you and I could live
forever." He talked about the
miracles Jesus performed and the people
he healed.
Most of the congregation was
attentive, but considered Reverend Morris
an entertainer, telling pretty stories.
The village people didn't understand he
was trying to teach them about
Christianity. One older man sitting at
the back of the congregation came to
understand clearly what Reverend Morris
was trying to do, and he didn't like what
he heard. He sat with his hands covering
his face. He tried to control himself,
but his mumbling could be heard
throughout the church. Finally he blurted
out, "What you're saying is all
lies. We don't want to hear
anymore."
It was obvious the old man
was of high standing in the community.
Reverend Morris would have to reason with
the man in order to continue the sermon.
"Sir," he said, "if I'm
telling the truth, would you not let your
people hear it?"
