Chapter 1 - Page 8 - Bright Light

   “Thanks, Reverend Cox,” he said.

Reverend Cox and Jim walked down the aisle toward the front door. They shook hands again and said good-bye. As Jim stepped out onto the church porch and shut the door, a calmness came over him. He looked up toward the sky. It was a beautiful day. The sun shone on his face and a gentle breeze ruffled his hair. The church was surrounded by tall trees and a manicured lawn with a church sign in the front and a parking lot beside the church. A sidewalk ran from the church to the street.

Jim formed a mental picture of God sitting on his throne. He closed his eyes to pray. “Father,” he said, “from now on, I will serve you however you will use me.”

Jim slowly walked toward the only car left at the curb. He opened the door and slid into the driver’s seat. He started the motor, but didn’t put the car in gear. He sat there, thinking about God and what heaven was like. He had never felt more content in his life. Jim sat there for over an hour with the motor running, lost in thought. All he could think about was heaven and life after death. He was familiar with the Bible, but had never read it. Now a desire to read the Bible was turning into a hunger.

Jim put his car in gear and drove toward his apartment, where he spent the rest of the day reading the old Bible his dad had passed down to him.
