Chapter 5 - Page 52 - Building A Village

“Praise God, Jackie,” Jim said, “you’re a dear friend. Let me get my Bible and we can go.”

When Jim got back to the car, Jackie was already in the driver seat. “Jackie,” Jim asked as he climbed in on the passenger side, “how is your mother doing?”

“You wouldn’t believe it,” Jackie replied. “The doctors can’t understand it. She is completely healed. You can’t tell she was ever sick.” Jackie looked like he was going to get emotional, but he managed to control himself.

“I’m really happy for you and your mother,” Jim exclaimed. “Isn’t God great?” “He certainly is,” Jackie agreed with much feeling.

The car spit, sputtered, and sometimes backfired its way to church. Jackie seemed to be deep in thought. Jim guessed he was thinking about his mother and how God healed her. Jim sat quietly in the passenger seat, enjoying the breeze blowing through his hair.

Finally Jackie broke the silence. “Jim, my mother had cancer and God healed her. He’s been good to me and now I have a strong desire to show him my appreciation.”

“God knows your heart,” Jim said. “He knows you love him.”

“I know,” Jackie said, “but I want to do something to show God I love him.”

“What do you have in mind?” Jim asked.

Jackie hesitated for a second. “Jim, I want to help people. I’d like to be a part of the work you’re doing. If it’s OK with you.”
