Chapter

Jim’s office was as appealing
and comfortable as any office in the
world. As he looked around the room, as
if for the last time, his eyes fixed on
the trophy case that was built into the
wall directly in front of his desk. The
case contained trophies he’d
received for playing sports in high
school and college. Jim stepped back
inside his office and walked over to the
trophy case for a closer look.
Mary knocked lightly on the
door.
“Come in,” Jim
said absently, eyes still on the case.
As she entered the room, Jim
noticed who it was. “Mary,” he
said, “do you see this trophy
case?”
“Yes.”
“I had it built
there,” he said, “so I could
look back on my achievements in high
school and college.”
Mary walked over to stand
beside Jim. She bent over and looked
inside the case.
“The trophies look
pretty in the case,” Jim mused,
“but I’ve always been too busy
to notice them.”
Mary seemed puzzled.
“Jim, I don’t understand. Why
does that bother you?”
“The trophy case
doesn’t bother me,” he replied,
“but it reminds me of something I
did; something that does bother me.”
Mary frowned, not
understanding what Jim was talking about.
