- Talking Eyes
“OK Jim,” Rhasha
said, “sit in the chair, and place
your cheek next to her lips.”
Jim did as Rhasha asked. The
little girl couldn’t move her lips,
but Jim understood. “Thank you,
pretty girl,” he said, “that
kiss made me very happy.” Jim held
her hand.
Rhasha pulled their hands
apart and placed one of Jim’s hands
on the bed. She picked up both the little
girl’s hands and placed them on
either side of Jim’s hand, then held
them in place with her own hands.
“Now watch her eyes,
Jim,” Rhasha said. “She’ll
blink, if this is what she wants to tell
you.” Rhasha drew a deep breath and
said, “She wants to tell you that
you have very pretty eyes.”
The little girl blinked her
eyes and, to make sure Jim saw her, she
blinked again.
“Also Jim, she wants to
tell you that she loves you.”
The little girl blinked her
eyes again.
Tears ran down Jim’s
face. “Sweetheart,” he said in
squeaky voice, “I love you,
too.”
Tears ran from the little
girl’s eyes, too. She looked so
happy that she could tell Jim these
things. Rhasha watched the little
girl’s eyes, to see if she had
anything else to say. The little girl
blinked twice. She held her eyes shut for
about two seconds each time. Rhasha knew
that it meant: thank you, and I love you,
too.
Rhasha nodded.
“You’re welcome, dear,”
she told the girl, “and I love you,
too.”
Jim kissed the little girl
on the cheek again. “Angel, you go
to sleep now and we’ll see you again
this afternoon.”
