Chapter

The children will be
taken care of, Jim replied.
If you wish, you can leave them
with us.
The man nodded. Jim shook
his hand. Thank you for bringing
them to us, Jim said. Any
time you know of anybody who needs help,
please let us know.
The slender black man
motioned for the others to get up, so
they could leave. Its good to
know that we have someone to turn to, if
we need help, he said.
Jim invited them to eat
breakfast at the dining hall. They all
accepted his invitation and left the
hospital.
Jim returned to the sick
womans bedside. Pepper rolled a
heart monitor from the office and
positioned it beside the womans
bed. She plugged the electrical cord into
the wall socket and taped the monitor
wires to the womans chest, then she
turned the monitor on. It was an
old-style monitor with a black and white
screen. A thin black line ran through the
middle of it. Jim and Pepper waited for
the monitor to receive information from
the womans heart.
The thin line continued to
scroll horizontally across the screen.
Suddenly the line shot upward slightly to
a peak and then settled back into the
straight line. Another peak followed, and
another, following the womans
heartbeat.
Jim looked at the woman. The
heart monitor was hooked up and the IV
was in her arm. An oxygen mask covered
the womans nose and mouth. Nothing
more could be done until the doctor
arrived.
As he looked at the woman in
the bed, he realized more construction
needed to be done to the hospital.
