ceased and the vibrations stopped.
Movement returned to normal and the sky
brightened. The humming sound rose,
pulsed, then after a few seconds, faded.
Jim and Jackie looked at the
car in amazement. The car had been
transformed from an old, worn out clunker
into a newer version of itself. It was
clean and sparkling where before it had
been dented and dirty. Not a scratch was
on it. Even the tires looked new. The
door Jackie always had to slam shut, now
latched properly. It was as if the car
had just rolled off the assembly line.
Jim and Jackie got back in
the car and continued down the road. The
engine purred like a kitten. Not a spit,
rattle, or clang could be heard.
We must have scared
the car when we talked about putting it
in the shop, Jackie said in a voice
soft with shock.
Jim laughed. I
dont think that was it, Jackie. I
think God just wanted us to get to church
this morning.
Jackie grinned. He
accelerated to fifty-five miles per hour
and maintained that speed until they
arrived in Nairobi. Before long they were
sitting in a church pew.
The church services were
rewarding, and the Holy Spirit warmed
every soul. The music was beautiful and
the sermon spoke to every heart. Jim and
Jackie left the church with their spirits
lifted and their faith stronger than
ever.
They returned to Jims
trailer for lunch, then drove down to the
river and sat on a steep bank under the
shade of the trees. They let their
shirttails hang out and rolled up their
pant legs so they could hang their bare
feet in the water. Jim and Jackie spent
the rest of the day talking about
whatever subject came up. God seemed to
be on both their minds a lot.
