Chapter 12 - Page 160 - Village Goes To Work

After lunch, Jim had Rhasha practice driving. Rhasha drove slowly to the main road and turned left at the stop sign to drive thirty miles one way, then thirty miles back. She’d chosen the main road because she wouldn’t have much shifting to do. Mindful of the fact that she made mistakes only when she needed to shift, Rhasha shifted slowly and carefully into each gear as she accelerated to forty miles per hour. Rhasha didn’t make one mistake during the whole hour and fifteen minutes she drove. Jim was impressed, mostly because she’d used her head and figured out how to drive for over an hour and rarely work the clutch.

“Very good job, Rhasha,” Jim said as she turned the motor off in front of their house and handed him the keys. “In a year or so, you should be ready to learn how to fly.”

She punched him on the shoulder. “I’ll be ready first thing in the morning, dear,” she said confidently.

Jim smiled. “You got it, angel. And I’m sure you’ll do just fine.”

Rhasha winked at him. “I think everything will be OK, as long as your paratrooper instincts don’t come back to you.”

Jim returned the wink. “You’ll never know until it’s too late, will you, dear?”

The remainder of the day went as it usually did. Jim and Rhasha spent most of their time at the hospital, talking and singing to all the patients.

That night, after Jim’s prayer and their showers, Jim took his guitar off the hook and began to sing. Rhasha joined in.
“This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
