Chapter 10 - Page 136 - Rhasha Drives

“It will start to roll, so hold onto your steering wheel. After you build up speed, push on your clutch, and shift to second gear. You just keep doing that-push on the clutch, shift to the next gear, and let out on the clutch. But,” he added, “at all times, watch where you’re going.”

Rhasha stuck her tongue out at him and smiled. She pushed in on the clutch and with a little difficulty, finally got it into first gear. She slowly let up on the clutch and pushed on the accelerator, but nothing happened.

“Did you forget something?” Jim asked.

Rhasha had a puzzled look on her face. “I don’t think so. I did everything you told me to do.”

“Would you like to start the jeep, Rhasha?”

“Well,” Rhasha said huffily, “you didn’t bother to tell me to do that.” She kissed him to take the sting out of her words and started the motor.

When Rhasha let out on the clutch, the jeep took off perfectly and she had control of the steering wheel. She tried to shift to second gear, but the gears ground.

“Sweetheart, you need to push in on the clutch before you shift.”

Rhasha pushed in on the clutch and shifted to second. She had very little problem with the other gears. She drove down the road very well, even though the jeep weaved a few times. She was only driving thirty-five miles per hour when they saw the main road ahead of them. The stop sign was about thirty-five yards in front of her.

“Jim,” Rhasha said, “do I need to slow down to make that turn ahead?”

“You have to stop at the main road.”
